Agricultural Component
[Back to Design Tour Guide]
While paddy fields are pretty sights and are important in rice production, it has to be
augmented with a system that is highly mechanized. Problems associated with the paddy
system is that it requires plenty of water resource; it is dedicated to producing one crop
- rice; it is labor intensive and labor is sometime not reliable.
 |
But the biggest problem is productivity. One family can farm 1.0 hectare
on a paddy system while the same family can farm 10,000 hectares on dryland highly
mechanized farming system. The technology to reach this level of productivity is available
to the transmigration community. The technology will also be taught in the Agricultural
Institutes and the Transmigration University of Technology. |

High mechanization enables the ability to prepare large tracks of fields
for planting just-in-time for the weather. Reengineering Philippine agriculture to highly
mechanize technology is strategic because (1) there are well established
agricultural technologies in Australia, Europe and USA which when applied in Philippine
environment. They will increase arable land and food production to supply local and export
demand in Asia. (2) There is an abundant land resources and the climatic
conditions, soil, water and weather are very suitable. |
