At present there is no efficient bulk transport facility for farm products in Cagayan Valley. The produce are hauled by trucks to Metro Manila over 350 kilometers distance on bad roads making the final consumer cost expensive. The recommended transport will use the Cagayan River to transport to bulk agricultural product. River boats will bring the farm produce to an international shipping port in Aparri. The river boats are made of concrete hulls. This a boat train set-up whereby a steam engine tag boat (using Isabela Coal for fuel) is pulling 10-15 hulls. There are various pickup stations along the Cagayan River bank along the a 250 kilometer stretch. Agricultural produce will be loaded into an empty cement boat hull much like a container system. This will be attached to the tag like attaching a car to a train. This boats will be manufactured in the Palanan complex in joint venture with a company that manufacture the cement boats. The bulk transport system will complement the massive agricultural development in the valley to be spearheaded by the transmigration project. |
