The project is a nursery operation that will cater to home gardens and coconut plantations. The product is a line of high breed coconut that are genetically engineered to be dwarf and bears fruit at the height of 1.5 meters. There are 15 varieties developed by Alamco R&D Team of Microbiologist. The varieties are determined by color, size and roundness. The color ranges from green, gold and red. Size is from oblong to round. Size of coconut fruit ranges 3 inches to 10 inches diameter.

Strategic technology

In addition, to the genetic engineering, the R&D team has developed the technology of propagation using tissue culture. This enables mass production of coconut seedlings in laboratory environment.

Alamco R&D has also developed a fertilizer (drip) that will enhance the ability of the coconut to survive different climatic conditions and to maximize its fruiting ability. Up to 200 fruit nuts per year is possible.
Before planting in mass, however, a suitability testing to formulate the most suitable fertilizer is required. Distance between plant is 7 meters. About 190 plants will fit in 1 hectare.

What is the International market implication?

Combining the result of R&D for dwarf coconut genetics, the technology to mass produce by tissue culture, and the drip to enable the plants to fruit at any condition, PLUS the bonsai golf innovation ---the combination of these in parallel commercial lines is exciting.

It is also possible to add more variation to the commercialization. The coconut line can also be an orchard plant for a farm that wants to sell green coconuts for juice. The green coconut can be sold as fruit to supermarkets and fruit markets. It can be sold to industrial farms which is engage in just producing coconut high breed seeds. You can forget coconut oil and cosmetics because these markets are fully serviced.

If export of cultures is not allowed

In some countries, however, the export of plant cultures is prohibited. In this situation the export of the technology itself to develop dwarf cultures from locally available species is a possibility.
